Frequently Asked Questions

What is the deadline for filing my Self Assessment tax return?
The online Self Assessment filing deadline is January 31 following the end of the tax year (April 5). For the 2025–26 tax year, the deadline is January 31, 2027. Paper returns must be filed by October 31.
When do I need to pay my Self Assessment tax?
Any tax owed for the 2025–26 tax year must be paid by January 31, 2027. You also need to make a first "payment on account" towards the 2026–27 tax bill by the same date. A second payment on account is due July 31, 2027.
What is Making Tax Digital (MTD)?
Making Tax Digital is HMRC's initiative to move to a fully digital tax system. Most VAT-registered businesses must keep digital records and submit VAT returns using MTD-compatible software. From April 2026, MTD for Income Tax will be phased in for self-employed individuals and landlords.
When is my VAT return due?
For quarterly VAT filers, the return and payment are due one calendar month and 7 days after the end of the quarter. For monthly filers, it's due by the end of the following month. If you use direct debit, HMRC collects payment 7 days after the submission deadline.
What happens if I miss the filing deadline?
An automatic £100 penalty applies if your Self Assessment return is up to 3 months late. After 3 months, daily penalties of £10 per day apply (up to £900). Further penalties of 5% of tax due apply at 6 and 12 months. Interest also accrues on late payments.
What is the Construction Industry Scheme (CIS)?
CIS requires contractors to deduct 20% (standard rate) or 30% (higher rate) from payments to subcontractors and pay this to HMRC monthly. Monthly CIS returns are due by the 19th of each month (22nd for electronic payments).
When are P11D forms due?
P11D forms (benefits in kind) for the 2025–26 tax year must be filed with HMRC by July 6, 2026, and copies given to employees by the same date. The accompanying P11D(b) (Class 1A National Insurance) is due by July 6.
