Sole traders

Tax invoice generator for sole traders

As a sole trader, your invoices go out under your own name or registered business name. Here is what to keep in mind:

ABN is essential

Always include your ABN so clients can verify your registration and withholding tax obligations do not apply.

GST threshold

You must register for GST once your annual turnover reaches $75,000. Below that, GST registration is optional.

Keep records

Retain copies of all invoices you issue for at least five years. The BrieflyGo editor lets you save and export each invoice PDF.

Checklist

Before you send your invoice

A compliant Australian tax invoice should include all of the following:

  • The words "Tax Invoice" appear at the top (if you are GST-registered)
  • Your business name or trading name is shown
  • Your ABN is included
  • Invoice date and a unique invoice number
  • Description of the goods or services supplied
  • GST amount shown for each applicable line item
  • Total amount payable including GST
  • Payment due date and preferred payment method

For invoices under $1,000 a simplified tax invoice format is permitted. Refer to the ATO for full requirements.

FAQ

Australian tax invoice questions

Is the Australian tax invoice generator free?

Yes. You can create, fill and export an Australian tax invoice PDF at no cost, with no account required.

Can I add my ABN to the invoice?

Yes. There is a dedicated ABN field in the generator. Your ABN will appear on the printed invoice as required by the ATO for tax invoices.

Does the tool support AUD currency?

Yes. All invoice totals are formatted in Australian dollars (AUD) by default.

How do I include GST on my invoice?

Enable the GST toggle in the line items section. The generator will calculate 10% GST per line and display a GST summary row and total including GST.

Can I issue a tax invoice if I am not registered for GST?

If you are not GST-registered you should issue a standard invoice without GST. You must not charge or show GST unless you are registered. BrieflyGo formats the document you describe — for registration requirements refer to official ATO guidance or a qualified adviser.

Can I edit the invoice PDF after generating it?

Yes. After generation the invoice opens in the BrieflyGo editor where you can adjust text, add annotations or a signature, and then export the final PDF.
